Joseph Barrett

On 25th October, 1997, Joseph Barrett was trying to enter a sea-cave in "Lady’s Bay" near Belderrig, Co. Mayo where four people had become trapped after their "curragh" had overturned. The conditions inside the cave were hazardous with waves of 15 to 20 feet. He attempted the rescue of his partner, Michael Heffernan, but was unsuccessful.

Joseph Barrett was awarded a Gold Medal and a Certificate of Bravery.

 

Michael Heffernan (Deceased)

On 25th October, 1997, Michael Heffernan lost his life while trying to enter a sea-cave in "Lady’s Bay" near Belderrig, Co. Mayo where four people had become trapped after their "curragh" had overturned. Three of the four people subsequently survived.

Michael Heffernan was awarded a posthumous Gold Medal and a Certificate of Bravery.

 

Brian Connolly

On 15th May, 1999, Brian Connolly dived into the River Moy, Coolcronan, Foxford, Co. Mayo to save a woman who had fallen in.

Brian Connolly was awarded a Silver Medal and Certificate of Bravery.

 

Garda Michael Murphy, Garda Padraig Keegan, Garda Colm McMenamin, Sharon Griffin and Valerie Poole

On 10th January, 2004 Garda Michael Murphy entered the River Nore at St. John’s Bridge, Kilkenny to try a rescue a man who was in difficulties, the man was subsequently rescued elsewhere.  Garda Murphy himself got into difficulties and was rescued by Garda Padraig Keegan and Garda Colm McMenamin.  Sharon Griffin and Valerie Poole assisted members of the Civil Defence at the scene.

Garda Michael Murphy was awarded a Silver Medal and a Certificate of Bravery.

Garda Padraig Keegan was awarded a Bronze Medal and Certificate of Bravery.

Garda Colm McMenamin, Sharon Griffin and Valerie Poole were awarded Certificates of Bravery.

 

Garda Linda O’Donnell

On 17th July, 2002, Garda Linda O’Donnell entered the River Blackwater at Ashe Quay, Fermoy, Co. Cork and rescued a woman who was in distress.

Garda Linda O’Donnell was awarded a Silver Medal and Certificate of Bravery.

 

Lt. William O’Meara

On 6th November, 2000, Lt. William O’Meara saved the life of a lorry driver who had been trapped in his cabin due to flooding at Longfield’s Bridge, Mallow, Co. Cork.

Lt. William O’Meara was awarded a Silver Medal and Certificate of Bravery.

 

Tony Paget and Demitrios Parakevakis

On 3rd December, 2000, Tony Paget and Demitrios Parakevakis rescued the driver of a Bus Éireann vehicle that had crashed into the River Liffey on Butt Bridge, Dublin 1.

Tony Paget and Demitrios Parakevakis were both awarded Silver Medals and Certificates of Bravery.

 

Geoffrey Taylor

On 29th January, 2001, Geoffrey Taylor saved a teacher from a fire in the Royal & Prior School, Raphoe, Co. Donegal.

Geoffrey Taylor was awarded a Silver Medal and Certificate of Bravery.

 

Hugh Trainor, Lorcan Dignam and Michael Murtagh

On 7th December, 2000, Hugh Trainor attempted to rescue a man and his daughter from the water at East Pier, Howth, Co. Dublin.

Hugh Trainor was awarded a Silver Medal and Certificate of Bravery.

Lorcan Dignam and Michael Murtagh were both awarded Bronze Medals and Certificates of Bravery.

 

Gerry Campion and David Ind

On 23rd August, 2000, Gerry Campion and David Ind helped save two young boys from drowning at Whiting Bay, Youghal, Co. Cork.

Gerry Campion and David Ind were both awarded Bronze Medals and Certificates of Bravery.

 

Garda Ronan Cowley

On 10th November, 2001, Garda Ronan Cowley entered into the River Liffey at Aston Quay, Dublin 2 and rescued a person who had been in distress in the water.

Garda Ronan Cowley was awarded a Bronze Medal and a Certificate of Bravery.

 

Tony Dunne


On 20th August, 2002, Tony Dunne rescued five people in a two-car collision at Whitfield North, Kilmeaden, Co. Waterford.

Tony Dunne was awarded a Bronze Medal and a Certificate of Bravery.

 

Michael Fitzgerald

On 6th August, 2001, Michael Fitzgerald entered a house to save a woman from a fire on Oakway, Clondalkin, Dublin 22.

Michael Fitzgerald was awarded a Bronze Medal and Certificate.

 

Garda Tony Geoghegan and Garda Kevin Joyce

On 17th October, 2000, Garda Tony Geoghegan and Garda Kevin Joyce rescued a man from an overturned car in the Grand Canal, Vicarstown, Athy, Co. Kildare.

Garda Tony Geoghegan and Garda Kevin Joyce were both awarded Bronze Medals and Certificates of Bravery.

 

Anne Marie Histon and Garda Margaret Purcell


On 17th March, 2003, Anne Marie Histon and Garda Margaret Purcell entered the water at Cappa Pier, Kilrush, Co. Clare in order to rescue a woman who was in distress.

Anne Marie Histon and Garda Margaret Purcell were both awarded Bronze Medals and Certificates of Bravery.

 

P.J. Kavanagh

On 30th August, 2000, P.J. Kavanagh rescued a woman who had become trapped in her car after an accident at Ballyredmond, Clonegal, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford.

P.J. Kavanagh was awarded a Bronze Medal and a Certificate of Bravery.

 

Eddie Mackle and Garda Gerard O’Sullivan

On 22nd March, 2003, Eddie Mackle and Garda Gerard O’Sullivan entered the river Liffey at Ormond Quay lower near the Halfpenny Bridge, Dublin 1 to rescue a woman who was in distress.

Councillor David McCarthy

On 6th March, 2003, Councillor David McCarthy helped bring two men who were inebriated, out of the River Lee at Morrisson’s Island, Cork City.

Councillor David McCarthy was awarded a Bronze Medal and a Certificate of Bravery.

 

Garda Eddie McFadden and Garda Gerard Moylan

On 1st January, 2003, Garda Eddie McFadden and Garda Gerard Moylan helped (Garda Moylan in the river and Garda McFadden on the shore) in the rescue of a man who had attempted suicide in the River Erne, Ballyshannon Bridge, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal.

Garda Eddie McFadden and Garda Gerard Moylan were both awarded Bronze Medals and Certificates of Bravery.

 

Mark Mullen

On 15th March, 2001, Mark Mullen rescued a woman from a fire in Skehard Road, Cork.

Mark Mullen was awarded a Bronze Medal and a Certificate of Bravery.

On 24th September, 2003, Garda Paul Murphy entered the River Liffey at Wellington Quay, Dublin 2 to rescue two men who were in difficulties.

Garda Paul Murphy was awarded a Bronze Medal and a Certificate of Bravery.

 

Garda Ruairí Nestor

On 21st August, 2000, Garda Ruairí Nestor attempted to save a man from the River Boyne, Drogheda, Co. Louth.

Garda Ruairí Nestor was awarded a Bronze Medal and a Certificate of Bravery.

 

Michael O’Connor, Andrew O’Driscoll and Leslie Ruddock

On 16th August, 2001, Michael O’Connor, Andrew O’Driscoll and Leslie Ruddock dived into the sea at Courtmacsherry, Co. Cork to try to save two men who were in difficulty. One of the rescued men survived, but the other man unfortunately died at the scene.

Michael O’Connor, Andrew O’Driscoll and Leslie Ruddock were all awarded Bronze Medals and Certificates of Bravery.

 

Elizabeth Barrett

In July, 1999, Elizabeth Barrett entered Lock Key at Lough Keel, Boyle, Co. Roscommon to rescue a woman who had got into difficulties.

Elizabeth Barrett was awarded a Certificate of Bravery.

 

Conor Beacon, John Kinsella and Kenneth Thorpe

On 16th October, 2002, Conor Beacon, John Kinsella and Kenneth Thorpe tended to a person who had been subject to a serious assault on Grafton Street.

Conor Beacon, John Kinsella and Kenneth Thorpe were all awarded Certificates of Bravery.

 

Student Garda Andrew Brady and Garda William O’Dwyer

On 16th June, 2003, Student Garda Andrew Brady and Garda William O’Dwyer were able to stop a woman trying to commit suicide in the River Liffey opposite the Smock Alley Apartments on Wood Quay, Dublin 8.

Student Garda Andrew Brady and Garda William O’Dwyer were both awarded Certificates of Bravery.

 

Noel Canning and Brendan Lardner

On 15th March, 2003, Noel Canning and Brendan Lardner entered the Grand Canal at Tandy’s Bridge, Naas, Co. Kildare to rescue a man who had attempted suicide.

Noel Canning and Brendan Lardner were both awarded Certificates of Bravery.

 

Michael Carroll and Garda Peter Shovlin

On 23rd October, 1998, Michael Carroll and Garda Peter Shovlin jumped into the Castletown River at Georges Quay, Dundalk, Co. Louth to assist a woman who had fallen into the water.

Both Michael Carrol and Garda Peter Shovlin were both awarded Certificates of Bravery.

 

Padraig Corcoran

On 1st September, 1987, Padraig Corcoran tended to the wounds of a man who had been accidently shot on Lough Rea, Co. Galway while both of them were duck shooting.  He was able to bring his friend to the shore where he received further medical attention and ultimately survived.

Padraig Corcoran was awarded a Certificate of Bravery.

 

Fireman Thomas Costelloe

On 24th December, 1996, Fireman Thomas Costelloe with the assistance of a fire crew, jumped into the River Shannon at Arthur’s Quay in Limerick and rescued a woman from the water at a time when the current was very strong.

Fireman Thomas Costelloe was awarded a Certificate of Bravery.

 

James Dempsey and Garda Michael O’Leary

On 23rd January, 2003, James Dempsey and Garda Michael O’Leary jumped into the Avoca River at South Quay, Arklow, Co. Wicklow to rescue a woman who was in distress.

James Dempsey and Garda Michael O’Leary were both awarded Certificates of Bravery.

 

Yvonne Donovan

On 24th June, 2001, Yvonne Donovan assisted a man who had been stabbed in the Cornmarket, Wexford.

Yvonne Donovan was awarded a Certificate of Bravery.

 

Elaine Fitzharris and Martin Fitzharris

On 5th January, 2003, Elaine Fitzharris and Martin Fitzharris rescued their mother from an overturned car after an accident at Ballinruane, Ballycullane, New Ross, Co. Wexford.

Elaine Fitzharris and Martin Fitzharris were both awarded Certificates of Bravery.

On 28th May, 2002, Sgt. Michael Haran and Garda Beatrice Ryan both entered the River Fergus, Ennis, Co. Clare to rescue a woman who was in distress.

Sgt. Michael Haran and Garda Beatrice Ryan were both awarded Certificates of Bravery.

Garda Edelle Ní Chunnaigh

On 27th May, 2003, Garda Edelle Ní Chunnaigh was able to stop a woman from trying to commit suicide at the canal bank beside the Clara Bridge, Kilbride Street, Tullamore.

Garda Edelle Ní Chunnaigh was awarded a Certificate of Bravery.

On 2nd February, 2002, Det. Garda Owen O’Connell was able to dissuade a man who was threatening to jump into the River Lee at Popes Quay, Cork City.

On 13th March, 2001, Garda Andrew O’Riordan rescued a woman who was attempting suicide at Bishop’s Quay, Limerick.

On 8th May, 2002, Fr. Edward Rogan, Sarah Togher and Aideen Walsh entered the sea at Doran’s Point, Dooriel, Ballycroy, Co. Mayo to rescue a man who had got into difficulties.
