Peter O’Keeffe (Deceased) and Jonathon O’Herlihy (Deceased)
On September 3rd 2006 Peter O’Keeffe (RIP) and Jonathon O’Herlihy (RIP) rescued 2 people who were out swimming at Owenahincha Strand, Co. Cork. While they were successful in their rescue of the two swimmers, unfortunately in their bid to swim back to shore they were drawn into an undercurrent and lost their lives.
Peter O’Keeffe and Jonathon O’Herlihy were both awarded Posthumous Gold Medals and Certificates of Bravery.
On October 9th 2004 David Skinner jumped into the River Liffey (Ha’penny Bridge area) in an attempt to save a man from drowning. The water was about 15ft deep and very cold.
David Skinner was awarded a Silver Medal and Certificate of Bravery.
On June 1st, 2004 Peter Farrelly was going by his neighbour’s house in Mullingar Co. Meath, when he noticed smoke billowing from the kitchen window. He had a key to the house, as he worked there. He got the woman of the house, Mrs. Gibson, dressed and out of the house. No sooner had they got out when the roof of the house collapsed.

On the 3rd April, 2005, Vidamantas Krinevicius rescued a woman from a submerged car, from Mullagh Lake, Mullaghland, Co. Cavan. Mr Krinevicius had to swim out to where the car was submerged and extricate her through an open window.

On the 20th February 2006 Francis Delaney entered a burning house in Thurles, Co Tipperary as there were 2 children trapped inside. He crawled on his stomach, through the kitchen to rescue them. Both children suffered smoke inhalation and had to be treated in hospital.

Garda Rory Geelon and Garda Enda Broderick
On 29th February 2004 Garda Rory Geelon and Garda Enda Broderick responded to an emergency call that a man had fallen into the River Liffey at Capel Street Bridge in Dublin. Both had to enter the water and swim to the man as he was in a distressed state. With the assistance of the Dublin Fire Brigade they were able to bring the man to safety.

Sergeant Con Horan, Garda Denis Counihan, Garda Mairead Reidy and Garda James Ellard
On the 21st November 2004, Sergeant Con Horan and Garda Denis Counihan along with Garda Mairead Reidy and Garda James Ellard responded to a report that a young man had entered the River Shannon at Clancy Strand, Limerick. Garda Ellard located the man at the scene. Garda Reidy tried to throw a life buoy but the man was unresponsive. Sergeant Horan administered CPR and First Aid and Garda Counihan assisted in bringing the man to safety. The man later made a full recovery in hospital after treatment.

Detective Garda Peter Cullen, Garda Dermot O’Connell and Garda Mark Keogh
On the 7th August 2004, Detective Garda Peter Cullen responded to an emergency call where a woman had entered the water at Doorly Park, Sligo. On arriving at the scene, Detective Garda Cullen located the woman with the aid of a member of the public. The woman’s body could be seen in the water, which was dark and its depth not discernible, yet Detective Garda Cullen entered nonetheless and managed to retrieve the woman. At this time Garda Dermot O’Connell and Garda Mark Keogh arrived at the scene and both entered the water to assist Detective Garda Cullen in the rescue. The lady was safely brought to shore and was treated in hospital where she made a full recovery.

On the morning of 31st August, 1993, Tom Maher and Jim O’Sullivan rescued a man from a septic tank in Passage East, Co. Waterford.

On the 16th August, 2004 at Mardyke, Co. Cork, Peter Burke and Ruth Doyle attempted to rescue a man from the River Lee.

Sergeant Oliver Duggan
On the 20th November 2004, Sergeant Oliver Duggan responded to an Emergency Call where a man had entered water and another man was stranded on an overturned boat. Sergeant Duggan, with the assistance of two others, successfully brought the men to shore.
